Farmers market booth

I am so sorry to anyone who has been seeking out my farmers market booth in Orillia on Saturdays, I have been absent the last 2 weekends and I will miss the next 2 coming. The truth is I am trying to work out a work schedule that will allow me to be at the market on Saturdays but this is not worked out yet. I will let you all know as soon as this changes.

In the meanwhile call me or email me with any questions and check out the charm selection on the website. Every charm is posted now and there are over 350 different charms. Keep an eye on the website as well because I’m going to start posting clearance items left over from the store.

Miss you all from the farmers market but hope to be back soon!

Just checking in!

Hey everybody! How’s your summer been? Aside from wet, my summer hasn’t been as relaxing as I thought it would be. Sorry for the lack of blogging but I’ve been really trying to settle in to my new life of farmers markets and trying to build an online store. I wanted to check in with a bit of an update on what magpie bead is up to.

First of all I’m loving our 3 farmers markets. At these markets, I set up a jewellery booth with several choices of on the spot jewellery making. You can choose your own beads from our trays of beads in glass, ceramic, gemstone, wood and bone. Choices include cord jewellery, bookmarks, earrings, keychains and more. It’s still a unique and personal gift idea. Our market locations include:

Bala – Monday 9-2

Parry sound – Tuesday 9-2

Orillia downtown – Saturday 7:30-12:30

Aside from the markets, I still offer custom hairwraps by appointment in my home. I live right in town and still accept debit and credit card transactions. Just call or email me to book a time.

Birthday parties are still available, this time in your own home. I will bring a spread of a sparkling selection of beads and charms and you can have your own private jewellery making party. I am available for parties sat and sun afternoons or Fri and SAT evenings for sleepovers! Check the party page on this website for info.

I hope you all have had a chance to check out the online store. I have to say the process has been very slow to get our products added. We now have all our seed bead lines posted and stocked up. We have about 3/4 of our selection of charms posted. There is also hemp, artistic wire, stretch cord, sinew and some other stuff posted. Please be patient with me. We are still adding. More charms are coming soon, then waxed cotton and leather cords are up next. If there is anything specific you are looking for that is not yet on our website, please call or email me and I may have it in stock for you. Pick ups can be done at the market or my home if you live in town.

So that’s the news in a nutshell. I’ll try not to let months go by before I blog again! It’s been great to see my orillia store customers at the market this summer. Thank you for that, it really makes my day. I saw many familiar faces at our booth at the Mariposa folk fest and I was happy to see you all! What a great time that was!

Well, enjoy the rest of your summers, keep checking the website, keep beading and keep in touch!

Love all,

Moving date

Well I have to say I’m not doing very well with keeping up with this blog! As it turned out I’ve been sick for the past two weeks or so and I apologize if there were a couple of store closures during that time. But I’m on the mend and just in time. We have been given an official move out date and it is a bit sooner than expected!

Magpie bead will be open until Sat May 13th. Yup it’s coming soon. I’m feeling panic and excitement all at once. There is not much time left! Please try to come in before I go. Everything in the store is on sale. Some things that I will continue to keep stock of are 10% off and other products like findings, loose beads and jewellery are up to 50% off! Please come say goodbye and check out the sales. Make sure if you have an order here you get it picked up. I will not disappear though. I am arranging to set up at the downtown farmers market in June. Oh and my Mariposa folk fest application is in and hopefully I will see many of you there once again! Now that I am not so sick I will be back on this blog more frequently. Keep in touch!😘

How I filled a bead store

So we’ve been diligently adding inventory to our website and I realize first of all just how much there really is. It’s overwhelming really. But I also see how the store has grown over the years. I started out as a jewellery hobbyist and started working with products that worked with the style of stuff I was doing. So I have sought out and experimented with many many beads and supplies until I found some old faithfuls. So I have been stocking my favorite supplies that I love to work with. Over the years I’ve been in business I have spent expanding my own skills and styles and have built up inventory based on the new materials I find and play with. As a result, I have a bead store that really reflects me and my style.

No bead store can have EVERYTHING but I have focused on products that are just not that easy to find in your average bead store. And there’s just not that many bead stores left these days it seems. I hope my online store will be just as unique. I will focus on the massive selection of both charms and seed bead I have been carrying. I also scope everywhere for large hole beads, also a very difficult thing to find if you want them in natural materials such as glass, stone and ceramic. Cord and leather jewellery always need large hole beads so I search and collect from everywhere.

I also expand my inventory by listening to customer requests. Every request I write down I keep my eyes peeled for and I have been known to call customers even months later because I finally found what they were looking for. I always feel like half my job is working here in the store and the other half is shopping! Not a bad gig I’d say!

I know it’s a big adjustment to go from bead store shopping to online bead store shopping but I really hope you will take the time to look through our estore. I believe you may be surprised when you see the extent of my products online. It’s probably more than you think!

The online store is still expected to open in the next couple of weeks so here’s crossing fingers and hoping for the best!

New charms and quick update

Hey there folks! So it’s March break and I have been travelling about doing March break workshops but have managed to pick up some new things. For all those makers and lovers of chakra stone jewellery we now have the complete set of chakra charms. Add to mala beads or make a chakra charm bracelet. These are gorgeous charms.

We’re also still slowly but surely getting all our inventory on our estore. I really hope we will have the online store open by the end of this month. That is the plan as of now. There is truly a boatload of stuff though so it’s taking about forever to get it all photographed and posted.

We still have no idea how long we will have our shop location so for now it’s still business as usual. But we have several things on sale super cheap like: Big Village recycled glass beads from Ghana, Czech seed beads, Kumihimo looms and supplies, and pandora-type beads and chains. There is also already a bunch of my jewellery posted on my Etsy page. Click the link to Etsy on the website and be sure to check that out too! Sorry for the brief post but I’ll chat more later. Maybe after March break when I can sit and breathe for half a minute!

New estore

I am seriously excited about this. We have been diligently working on the estore and so far have over 600 products posted. I apologize for the website being out of order during this time but be patient. There is a master plan. All our products will eventually be available to browse through in the comfort of your home. We are hoping to open the estore this month so stay tuned!!

Please feel free to comment or respond or suggest anything. I will try to answer everyone. I am truly sorry to all those who are sad to see the Peter st store close but I hope you will all visit me at the farmers market and try my online store. You can still email me to request specific products or order in bulk. I will try to always be available. The store phone number will still be active so you can also call with any questions. I hope to hear from you!

A Letter From Karen

To all my dearest customers!

Well folks, I thought I’d write this personal letter to you all because I have some pretty big news.  After 14 awesome years that my shop has resided in downtown Orillia, I have come to a very thought out, very difficult decision.  I have decided to close my beautiful shop on Peter St. and move into the online world.  I have struggled a bit with my health for the last couple of years and have realized that I really needed a change and I needed a work from home scenario.

I am excited to announce that we are building an online store on this website.  All my products will still be available online.  Imagine the luxury of sitting at home in your jammies scrolling through hundreds of unique charms or beads.  You can even pick up your order in Orillia without having it shipped!  On top of that, I hope to be a regular vendor at the downtown Orillia farmer’s market so you can always find me there with my jewellery and drop-in projects.

I am excited for these changes, but also so sad to go. I will miss your faces everyday. I will miss all my Magpie ‘children’.  I want all those kids to know that I absolutely will still be doing hair wraps by appointment, in either your home or mine.  I will also still be offering home birthday parties and school workshops.  Magpie Bead will most certainly still be in business, just differently.  I will continue this blog and I hope you will follow it to get news and updates. I’ll keep you informed of all the upcoming clearance sales as well as new products.

The truth is, I still don’t have a date yet when the actual store closing is happening.  I expect at least 3 months or more before it happens. I will keep you all updated.  The online store should hopefully open in the next month.  The website still has a helpful basic skills page and I will be still adding more tutorials.  Keep an eye on this website. It will hopefully be an awesome resource when its done!!

Please come see me before I go.  I would love to see everyone.  I will have many deals and sales in the store so check in on that.  There maybe some treats that I’m clearing out of!
